Subject: Cape Coral Police Detectives Make Arrest in Dolphin Statue Theft

The Cape Coral Police Department's Street Crimes Unit has made an arrest in the case of a stolen bronze dolphin statue. SCU Officer Jason Sprague, who is assigned to a task force made up of investigators from local law enforcement agencies to combat metal theft/scrapping, arrested David Albert Genovese for the crime on June 15th.

On May 21st an employee of Allied Recycling in Fort Myers contacted the Lee County Metal Theft Taskforce and stated that her company purchased a large bronze dolphin statue that she later believed was stolen.

Detectives interviewed Shauana Teter, the seller of the statue. Teter told investigators that the statue was not stolen. She stated that she and Matthew Grove were asked by David Genovese to retrieve the statue from a home in Cape Coral. Teter said that Genovese told her that he had performed handyman work for the Cape Coral homeowner and the statue was payment. Investigators then interviewed Matthew Grove who echoed Teter's statement to police.

On June 10th, Officer Sprague located the owner of the statue. The owner told police that he had been ill and was away from his home and did not know that his statue had been stolen. He provided a sworn statement to police that he did not give anyone permission to take his statue and that it was indeed stolen.

Detectives obtained surveillance video of the transaction which shows Genovese, Teter and Grove selling the victim's statue for cash at Allied Recycling.

On June 15th, Officers with the Metal Theft Taskforce located Genovese at his residence and questioned him about the theft. Upon interviewing Genovese, he confessed to the theft and sale of the dolphin statue. He was charged with Burglary of a Dwelling, Grand Theft and Criminal Mischief.

The now famous dolphin statue has been returned to its rightful owner.
