Subject: Metal-Theft Taskforce Makes Arrest in High Profile Theft Case

On July 29th Officers responded to a report of copper theft at the Lee County School District construction site for the ALC building located at 1429 NE 15th Avenue in Cape Coral.

The suspect in the theft forcibly entered an electrical box belonging to LCEC and stole copper wire. The value of the copper and cost of repair to the box was roughly $3500. Additionally, there was over $20,000 worth of copper wiring taken from the construction site by the thief.

Detectives from the Cape Coral Police Dept, Fort Myers Police Dept and the Lee County Sheriff's Office began investigating the high dollar theft. Detectives discovered that a known suspect sold metal (of the same type taken from the ALC site) to two recycling centers within days of the crime. The suspect unloaded hundreds of pounds of metal at Precious Metals and Garden Street Recycling, both in Cape Coral.

Witness statements, transaction receipts and forensic analysis of the transaction paperwork gave Detectives probable cause to arrest David Daniel Daugherty for the crimes.

Daugherty was located and arrested on August 9th and charged with Grand Theft, Criminal Mischief, Trespass on a Construction Site, Dealing in Stolen Property and False Verification to a 2nd Hand Metal Recycler.
