Subject: Cape Coral Police and Neighborhood Watch to Celebrate National Night Out

Cape Coral Neighborhood Watch and the Cape Coral Police Department will celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday August 2nd from 6pm - 9pm at Jaycee Park.

National Night Out was started by the National Association of Town Watch back in 1984 as "America's Night Out Against Crime". It was originally an effort to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anticrime efforts. Original organizers felt that a high-profile, high-impact type of crime prevention event was needed nationally.

The Cape Coral Police Department and Cape Coral Neighborhood Watch have participated in National Night Out for many years now. The usual participation was lots of small groups gathering on a neighborhood level to have barbeques and block parties to get to know each other.

In recent years, National Night Out has grown to include large block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests and rallies.

This year Bill Speed, President of Cape Coral Neighborhood Watch, organized a large event complete with a kids' talent show and catered festival at Jaycee Park to celebrate NNO.

Cape Coral residents are encouraged to come and meet their neighbors and get involved in Neighborhood Watch. Attendees will be treated to a Police K9 Demo and a Police Motorcycle Demo.

Residents who are not able to attend the block party at Jaycee Park can show support for National Night Out be turning on a porch light from 6p - 9p that night.
