Subject: Multi-Agency Metal Theft Taskforce Nets Two More Arrests

Officers from the Fort Myers and Cape Coral Police Departments as well as Deputies from the Lee County Sheriff's Office assigned to a Metal-Theft Taskforce have arrested two suspects in an elaborate scam to scrap copper and other metals.

The taskforce identified Jason Sawicki and Eugene Weisensee, both of Cape Coral as persons of interest in metal theft and dealing in stolen metals. Both suspects were identified as having an unusually high amount of sales of brand new 10' sections of copper tubing to Allied Recycling Center in Cape Coral.

Officers began to conduct surveillance on the suspects. The two were seen on numerous occasions, going into various hardware and home improvement stores for the purposes of shoplifting expensive yet small items. The pair would then return the stolen merchandise and receive a gift card or store credit in the amount of the stolen item.

The suspects would then "legitimately" purchase copper tubing with the store credit and/or gift card and take the copper to a scrap yard for cash.

On August 1st, Taskforce members arrested Sawicki and Weisensee for the crimes.

Taskforce members believe that this scam is part of a larger operation and they are currently conducting other surveillance operations.
