Subject: Cape Police K9 Unit Conducts Training; Receives Equipment thru Partnership with Local Businesses

The Cape Coral Police Department's K9 Unit is partnering with two local businesses, AutoPride and Pet Coral, to host a training class and replace some much needed equipment. September 7th thru September 9th, the Cape Coral Police K9 Unit will attend SKIDDS and CATS training.

SKIDDS stands for SWAT & K9 Interacting During Deployment School, which trains the K9 and their handler for the unique challenges of being utilized during a critical incident with the SWAT team. CATS stands for Canine Tactical School, which prepares the K9 and their handler for other tactical deployments.

The department's K9 Unit will also receive a replacement "bite suit" and other equipment for training. A bite suit allows a trainer to be bitten while training with Police K9s at real-speed training without injury.

Cape Coral Police K9 Officer Brian Aponte organized the training with the help of Dov Rapoport, the owner of Pet Coral and Joe Formica, the owner of AutoPride. The training will be conducted at Pet Coral's facility which is Southwest Florida's only indoor K9 training arena. This controlled, air conditioned environment is a superb venue for specialized training. AutoPride donated the necessary funds for the department to replace their six year old bite suit as well as sponsored the use of Pet Coral's arena.

"CCPD has one of the best training programs in the area which draws K9 teams to the Cape to train. We are grateful for, and proud of, the partnership with Pet Coral and AutoPride. I'm also proud of Officer Aponte for working with the community and being creative in finding ways to train"-Sergeant Dave McConnell, who has 23 years of Police K9 experience and runs CCPD's unit.
