Cape Coral Police Make Arrest in Overnight Armed Robbery

(January 24, 2012)- At 1:30am, Cape Coral Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven store located at 3206 Santa Barbara Blvd. The clerk told police that an unknown male entered the store and attempted to purchase cigarettes. Upon the clerk ringing up the sale, the male pulled two knives from his pants pocket and demanded all of the money from the register. The clerk complied and gave the male all of the money, $36 dollars. The suspect fled on foot across Santa Barbara Blvd.

Officers arrived in the area and began to search for the suspect. An officer made contact with a suspicious person a few blocks north from the store at 3:00am. The suspicious male was standing on a street corner when officers located him. The male, Justin Taveras was smoking a Newport cigarette, the same brand of cigarette taken from the 7-Eleven in the robbery.

Taveras denied any involvement in the robbery and told officers that he got the cigarette from his friend Max's nephew, Anthony Marrero, earlier. Taveras told officers that the three of them were at Max's house for the entire night except for when Anthony Marrero went to get cigarettes at approximately 1:30am.

Officers accompanied Taveras back to Max's residence and made contact with the occupants. Officers made contact with Anthony Marrero who matched the description of the suspect in the surveillance video from the robbery. Marrero confessed to officers that he robbed the 7-Eleven store earlier in the evening.

Anthony Marrero was arrested on charges of Robbery w/a Weapon and taken to the Lee County Jail.

"This was outstanding work by the Patrol Officers and Supervisors of the 4th Platoon as well as our Major Crimes Detectives. To have a violent robbery solved and the suspect in jail within a few hours is a tremendous accomplishment."-Lieutenant Tony Sizemore.
