Cape Police Partner with Resident to Catch Another Burglar

(April 24, 2012)- On April 23rd at 7:45pm, Cape Coral Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a burglary in progress at 1406 SW 8th Place.

The homeowner told police that he walked into his garage to have a cigarette and came face to face with a black male wearing a hooded sweatshirt in his garage standing by the victim's car. The suspect, later identified as Evon Dawkins, told the victim that he was going to ask for a glass of water. When the victim asked Dawkins why he didn't come to the front door, Dawkins became confrontational, gestured to the waistband of his pants and told the victim that he was armed with a pistol.

Dawkins then ran from the home while the victim called Cape Coral Police. Officers responded to the area and began searching for a suspect wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and tan pants.

Officers located a male matching the description blocks away from the scene.

The suspect was detained while the victim was brought to the scene to attempt to identify the suspect. Upon arrival at the location where officers had the suspect detained, the victim positively identified the suspect as the male whom he confronted in his garage.

Evon Dawkins was arrested on charges of Occupied Burglary of a Dwelling. Dawkins was not in possession of a gun at the time of his arrest. He remains in jail at this hour.
