Cape Coral Police Make Arrests; Clear Multiple Burglary/Arson Cases
(July 10, 2012)- Cape Coral Police have arrested two juveniles in connection with dozens of vehicle burglaries and two arson cases. Damian Bennett and Matthew Dziadul, both 17, were arrested by officers from the 3rd Platoon in the early morning hours of July 9th.
Detectives have been piecing together numerous vehicle burglaries over the last month and two vehicles that were set on fire. Detectives found a link in the crimes and believed that they were being committed by the same individual or small group of individuals.
Investigators shared their intelligence on the suspects with patrol officers on the street and officers began to look for the suspects in the areas that had been hit. Officers especially looked in the early morning hours (after midnight, before sunrise) for the suspects.
On Monday July 9th at approximately 3:45am, officers received a call about a car alarm activation. The car's owner reported that he heard his alarm going off and when he went to investigate, he discovered that someone had broken into his car.
Officers converged on the area and set up a perimeter. A short time later, officers saw the suspects running. After a brief foot chase, the suspects were apprehended. Upon being interviewed by detectives, Bennett and Dziadul admitted to committing dozens of burglaries over the past month.
"This is an example of the intelligence based policing model that we subscribe to. Our patrol officers do not take the shotgun approach and simply drive around; we share information between our Crime Analysts, Detectives and other Patrol Officers. We then use that information to devise organized patrols in an effort to catch criminals and keep the city safe.
Armed with this shared intelligence on the burglary suspects, our officers were in the right place at the right time to make an arrest and clear many cases. This doesn't happen by accident. The other essential component of this capture is the alert citizen who called Cape Coral Police without delay."
