Cape Police Investigating Second Major Crash of the Day; 13 Year-Old in Critical Condition
(October 21, 2013)- At around 5:45 PM, Cape Coral Police, Fire, and EMS units responded to a traffic crash in the 2700 Block of SW 20th Avenue involving a pickup truck with trailer and a bicyclist. Evidence on-scene and witness testimony indicate that the child operating the bicycle veered into the street from a vacant field, striking the trailer that the pickup truck was pulling.
As a result of the traffic crash, a 13 year-old boy was ejected from the bicycle and sustained life threatening head injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured. The bicyclist was transported to Lee Memorial and later airlifted to the Children's Unit at Tampa General Hospital. Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigator is investigating this case. Below is the preliminary synopsis of the crash:
DATE: October 21, 2013
TIME: 5:45 pm
LOCATION: 2700 SW 20 Avenue
VEHICLE 1: Black Fitbikeco bicycle.
DRIVER 1: ***JUVENILE****
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Juvenile suffered life threatening head injuries in the traffic crash.
VEHICLE 2: 2005 Ford F650 truck with trailer, Florida tag# N8554S.
DRIVER 2: Victor M. Criollo, H/M, 11-25-82, 17 NW 35 Place, Cape Coral, Florida 33993.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Criollo suffered no injuries in the traffic crash.
Vehicle 1, a bicycle ridden by a 13- year old boy, was traveling North on SW 20 Avenue in the roadway, in the 2700 block. Vehicle 2, a Ford F650 work truck pulling a trailer, was traveling North on SW 20 Avenue behind Vehicle 1. According to evidence and multiple witnesses, Vehicle 2 came to a complete stop behind Vehicle 1 as traffic was coming South. Vehicle 1 exited the roadway and began to ride in the vacant grass/field on the East side of the roadway with another bicyclist. Vehicle 2 then started North on SW 20 Avenue and the truck portion of the vehicle passed Vehicle 1. For unknown reasons, Vehicle 1 veered back left and drove back onto the roadway as if he did not see the trailer still passing him. The outside of the right rear trailer tire, on the roadway, struck the left rear foot peg on the axle of the rear wheel of Vehicle 1. This action caused vehicle 1 to lose control and the rider was ejected off of the bicycle and struck his head on the edge of the roadway.
The driver of Vehicle 1 was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital by ambulance. The driver of Vehicle 1, a 13 year old boy, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the traffic crash, which is required under FSS 316.2065 (under the age of 16, helmets are required). Alcohol/drugs were NOT a factor in this traffic crash.
The driver of Vehicle 1 is currently being airlifted to Tampa General Hospital (children’s unit) for medical attention. The driver of Vehicle 1 is listed in critical condition. The next-of-kin HAS BEEN notified.
