Update on Serious Injury Crash- 200 Block of Cape Coral Parkway East

(October 21, 2013)- People traveling on Cape Coral Parkway around lunchtime today were met with a quite a tangle of traffic.  This was due to a serious injury crash that occurred in the 200 block of cape Coral Parkway East.  The crash occurred at around 12:33 PM, when a motorcycle struck the rear of another car in the westbound lanes of Cape Coral Parkway between Palm Tree Boulevard and Santa Barbara Boulevard.  The crash ejected the driver of the motorcycle, who sustained life-threatening injuries.

Cape Coral Police, Fire, and EMS units responded to the scene.  The crash and subsequent investigation had Cape Coral Parkway completely shutdown for about three hours.  Traffic was diverted around the crash at Palm Tree Boulevard.

Below is the synopsis of the initial crash investigation:

VEHICLE 1: 2012 red Triumph motorcycle, Florida tag# 4062LE.
 DRIVER 1: Christopher Brady Griffiths, W/M, 1810 SW 47 Terrace, Cape Coral, Florida 33914.
 DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Griffiths suffered several life threatening injuries in the traffic crash.

VEHICLE 2: 2008 grey Nissan Altima, Florida tag# P942EN.
 DRIVER 2: Jarod M. Gibbs, W/M, 16115 Via Solera Circle #103, Fort Myers, Florida 33908.
 DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Gibbs suffered no injuries in the traffic crash.

SYNOPSIS:  

Vehicle 1 was West on Cape Coral Parkway from Palm Tree Boulevard area in the middle lane.  Vehicle 2 was West on Cape Coral Parkway in the inside lane.  According to witnesses, Vehicle 1 was traveling in excess of 60 mph, changed lanes into the inside lane, and attempted to change lanes back into the middle lane in traffic.  Vehicle 1 struck the rear of Vehicle 2 in the inside lane, causing the driver of Vehicle 1 to be ejected off of the vehicle.  The driver of Vehicle 1 came to final rest in the middle lane of traffic.

Due to injuries, the driver of Vehicle 1 was trauma alerted by ambulance to Lee Memorial Hospital.  The driver of Vehicle 2 did not suffer injuries.

The driver of Vehicle 1 is listed in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital.  The driver of Vehicle 1 was wearing a helmet at the time of the traffic crash.  Alcohol WAS a factor in this traffic crash.  Traffic Homicide Investigators and Forensics responded.

***There have been 15 traffic fatalities in our city in 2013. (There are 2 fatalities that are ruled "medical" and the cause of death is not related to injuries in the traffic crash. These 2 "medical" fatalities are not included in the number of 15 traffic fatalities).***

2011= 11 Traffic fatalities (this number DOES NOT INCLUDE 2 medical and 1 suicide ruled deaths)

2010= 9 Traffic fatalities

2009= 8 Traffic fatalities (this number DOES NOT INCLUDE 1 medical ruled death)
