Cape Coral Police Investigating A Second Serious Crash Involving a Bicyclist in a Week
(October 25, 2013)- The Cape Coral Police Department responded to the 600 block of SE 47 Terrace at around 2:20 PM this afternoon after a collision between a car and a bicyclist sent one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Cape Coral Police Department, Fire and EMS responded to the scene. CCPD Traffic Homicide Investigators and Forensics Personnel had the intersection of SE 6 Ave./SE 47 Ter. shut down for almost 3 hours as they conducted their investigation and gathered evidence. Below is the preliminary synopsis of the crash:
DATE: September 25, 2013 TIME: 2:22 pm
LOCATION: Southeast 47th Terrace and Southeast 6th Avenue
VEHICLE 1: 2002 Nissan four door car, Florida tag K586UN.
DRIVER 1: Russell K. Smith, 04/01/1944, 222 Southeast 46th Lane, Cape Coral, Florida 33904.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: The driver of V1 suffered no injuries in this traffic crash.
PROPERTY DAMAGE (Bicycle): Huffy bicycle.
OPERATOR OF BICYCLE: Edward J. Bergen, 10/18/1957, 614 Southeast 46th Street, Cape Coral, Florida 33904.
OPERATOR OF BICYCLE INJURIES: Bergen suffered serious bodily injuries and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with head trauma. He is listed in serious but stable condition.
V1 was traveling East bound on Southeast 47th Terrace. Bergen was riding his bicycle East bound on the North portion of the Southeast 47th Terrace roadway, against the flow of traffic.
At the intersection of Southeast 47th Terrace and Southeast 6th Avenue, the operator of V1 was attempting to make a left turn, in order to travel Northbound on Southeast 6th Avenue. At the same time, Bergen proceeded Eastbound into the intersection on his bicycle. Bergen`s front bicycle tire impacted V1`s front middle bumper. Bergen was ejected from his bicycle and onto the upper hood and lower windshield of V1. After impacting the lower windshield of V1, Bergen rolled off of V1 onto the pavement of Southeast 6th Avenue.

A traffic homicide investigation is ongoing, this traffic crash is not alcohol or drug related.
The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the traffic crash.
