Bicyclist From Morning Crash Still In Critical Condition
December 20, 2013)- At around 5:59 AM, Cape Coral Police Officers responded to a serious bodily injury crash in the 2300 block of SE 24th Avenue. The crash involved a car and a bicycle. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured while the bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries (the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet) and was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital. Cape Coral Police Department Patrol, Traffic Homicide Investigators, and Forensics Units responded and spent several hours investigating this crash. See the preliminary synopsis below:

LOCATION: 300-block Southeast 24th Avenue.
VEHICLE 1: 1999 Nissan Altima, 4 Door Car, Florida tag# CDME08.
DRIVER 1: Juan Ramiro Martins, H/M 10-30-1985, 517 SE 23rd Pl, Cape Coral, Florida 33990
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Martins suffered no injures.
PROPERTY DAMAGE (BICYCLE): Fitbikeco Bicycle, BMX style
OPERATOR OF BICYCLE: Justin Dean Esposito, W/M 5-20-1995, 1070 Laurel DR, N. Ft. Myers, Florida 33917
OPERATOR OF BICYCLE INJURIES: Esposito, suffered life threatening injuries and was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Vehicle # 1, driven by Juan Ramiro Martins was traveling northbound in the outside lane on Southeast 24th Avenue in the 300 block. The bicycle, driven by Justin Exposito, was crossing (West to East), through the grassy median, on SE 24th Avenue not in a designated cross walk area. The bicyclist was wearing dark colored clothing and was in a poorly light area.
As the bicyclist crossed the North bound lanes of SE 24th Avenue, he entered into the outside lane, violating the right of way of Vehicle # 1. Vehicle #1’s front end struck the bicycle on the right side. The bicycle and Exposito then slid northbound on SE 24th Avenue until they came to their final rest.
Exposito was Trauma Altered to Lee Memorial Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

A Major Crash Investigation if ongoing and it appears alcohol/drugs ARE a factor in this traffic crash at this time. The next-of-kin HAS BEEN notified.
The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the traffic crash.
