Convicted Felon Sentenced to Over 3 Years in Prison for Gun Charge
(April 9, 2013)- Matthew Jarvis Hoffer, 30, of North Fort Myers, was sentenced on Monday to 40 months in state prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In February of this year, Cape Coral Police Officers pulled Hoffer over as he was driving a pick-up truck in the North Cape. Officers discovered narcotics as well as a Taurus .40 cal handgun.
A check of Hoffer's criminal record by officers at the scene revealed that he was a convicted felon. Florida law prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms. Hoffer was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Hoffer, along with the 40 months in prison, will be designated as a career criminal/habitual felony offender.
"There are many obstacles and challenges facing the criminal justice system when it comes to putting criminals in prison. However, a solid case prepared by a police officer coupled with a strong effort from a prosecutor will usually overcome those obstacles and challenges.
