Cape Coral Police Investigating a Serious Injury Crash That Occurred Friday Night

(September 13, 2013)- At around 7:13 pm, Cape Coral Police responded to 1500 NE Pine Island Road on a two-vehicle crash involving a bicycle.

VEHICLE 1: 2013 Infiniti SUV, maroon in color.

DRIVER 1: Joseph A. Anders, W/M, 4-13-55, 9614 Cobalt Cove Drive, Naples, Florida 34120.

DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Anders suffered no injuries during the traffic crash.

VEHICLE 2: Genesis bicycle, white in color.

DRIVER 2: Gary L. Wheeler, Jr, W/M, 12-2-69, 1104 NE Van Loon Terrace, Cape Coral, Florida 33990.

DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Wheeler suffered life threatening head injuries during the traffic crash. 



Vehicle 1 was traveling East on Pine Island Road in the outside (right) lane in the 1400 block.  Vehicle 2, a bicycle, was traveling West in the South shoulder of the roadway.  Vehicle 2 was traveling in a marked bicycle lane in front of the Goodwill store, 1500 NE Pine Island Road.  As Vehicle 1 approached Vehicle 2, Vehicle 1 drifted to the right and caused the entire right half of the vehicle to exit the lane and enter into the bicycle/shoulder lane.  The front of Vehicle 1 then struck the front of Vehicle 2 head on.  During the traffic crash the driver of Vehicle 2 was forced up onto the hood and into the windshield before ejecting off of the passenger side of the vehicle.  Driver 2 came to a stop in the grassy shoulder of the roadway with Vehicle 1 coming to a step back in the outside (right) lane.

During the traffic crash the driver of Vehicle 2 was NOT wearing a helmet and suffered life threatening head injuries.  The driver of Vehicle 2 was trauma alerted by ambulance to Lee Memorial Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

This traffic crash IS NOT alcohol/drug related.  Due to the extent of the injuries sustained, this crash is being investigated by the Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigator.  Next-of-kin has been notified.

***There are 15 traffic fatalities in our city in 2013. (There are 2 fatalities that are ruled "medical" and the cause of death is not related to injuries in the traffic crash. These 2 "medical" fatalities are not included in the number of 15 traffic fatalities).***
