(November 7, 2014)-  Yesterday afternoon, Cape Coral Police Department responded to a 3-vehicle crash in the area of Santa Barbara Boulevard and Pine Island Rd.  Two people were sent to nearby hospitals as "trauma alerts."  Cape Coral Police Department Crash investigators and Forensics personnel responded to the scene.  Below is the investigator's preliminary synopsis of the crash:

VEHICLE 1: 2001 Toyota Camry.
DRIVER 1: Catherine Sturge, 10/14/1950, of Fort Myers, Fl 33919.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Sturge was trauma alerted to a local hospital by ambulance with life threatening injuries.

VEHICLE 2: 2013 Kia Soul.
DRIVER 2: Arthur Collins, 06/18/1946, of Cape Coral, Florida 33991.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Collins suffered minor injuries and refused transport.

VEHICLE 3: 2002 Toyota Highlander.
DRIVER 3: Norberto Rivero, 06/05/1943, of North Fort Myers, Florida 33917.
DRIVER 3 INJURIES: Rivero suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
PASSENGER: Gustavo Rivero, 05/11/1978 of, North Fort Myers, Florida 33917.
PASSENGER INJURIES: Rivero was trauma alerted to a local hospital by ambulance with life threatening injuries.

SYNOPSIS:
Vehicle 1 was traveling Eastbound on NE Pine Island Rd.  According to the independent witness, Vehicle 1 was traveling in the inside lane.  Vehicle 2 was traveling Westbound on NE Pine Island Road in the inside lane.  Vehicle 3 was traveling Westbound on NE Pine Island Road in the outside lane a short distance behind Vehicle 2.

Vehicle 1 made a left (North) turn onto Santa Barbara Boulevard and into the right-of-way of Vehicles 2 and 3.  The front left of Vehicle 1 struck the left rear tire area of Vehicle 2 forcing Vehicle 2 to spin and come to rest in the roadway facing North.  The front of Vehicle 1 then drove into the direct pass of Vehicle 3.  Both vehicles struck each other head on.  Vehicle 1 was redirected to the Northwest and to final rest in the Northwest corner of the intersection.  Vehicle 3 was redirected to the Northeast and came to final rest on Santa Barbara Boulevard, North of the intersection against the East curb.

Due to the severity of impact, the driver of Vehicle 1 and the front passenger of Vehicle 3 suffered life threatening injuries and were ambulance to a local hospital.  The driver of Vehicle 2 suffered minor injuries and refused transport.  The driver of Vehicle 3 suffered minor injuries but was transported to a local hospital with the passenger.

MCI Officer Satterlee and Forensic Specialist Fordham responded to the traffic crash.

***INJURY UPDATE: The driver of Vehicle 1 has suffered several minor injuries and is in stable condition.  The passenger of Vehicle 3 is still listed in critical condition.

This traffic crash IS NOT alcohol/drug related.  The next-of-kins HAVE BEEN notified.  Due to the seriousness of injuries, further investigation is being conducted.
