Cape Coral Police Investigate Traffic Fatality Overnight


(March 29, 2014)-  On Friday night, Cape Coral Police responded to a serious injury crash at Del Prado Boulevard North & Coral Lakes Boulevard.  The crash involved a motorcycle and a van.  The motorcyclist, identified as Brian Michael Giel, was pronounced dead at the scene.  A Cape Coral Police Traffic Homicide Investigator (THI) is handling the investigation.  Below is the initial synopsis from the THI:

VEHICLE 1: 1995 Suzuki motorcycle green in color, Florida tag# 8977LF.
DRIVER 1: Brian Michael Giel, W/M, 5-22-90, 1927 SE 11 Terrace, Cape Coral, Florida 33990.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Giel died on scene due to injuries in the traffic crash.

VEHICLE 2: 2014 Dodge Caravan blue in color, Florida tag# BPXK68.
DRIVER 2: Lee Reeves, W/M, 6-1-53, 3012 Lake Manatee Court, Cape Coral, Florida 33909.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Reeves suffered no injuries.

PASSENGER: Colicia Reeves, W/F, 1-5-57, 3012 Lake Manatee Court, Cape Coral, Florida 33909.
PASSENGER INJURIES: Reeves suffered no injuries.


Vehicle 1, a motorcycle, was traveling South on Del Prado Boulevard approaching the area of Coral Lakes.  Vehicle 2 was North on Del Prado Boulevard and entered into the turn lane to turn West into Coral Lakes.

According to the driver of Vehicle 2, there were no lights/vehicles approaching the intersection and began to turn.  The driver advised that Vehicle 1 then appeared in front of his headlights and the front of Vehicle 2 struck the left side of Vehicle 1.  The driver of Vehicle 1 was ejected from the vehicle, struck the roadway and then the curb with his head.  The driver of Vehicle 1 came to final rest in the front lawn of Coral Lakes.

CCFD and Lee County EMS arrived and declared the driver of Vehicle 1 deceased on scene.  The driver of Vehicle 2 showed NO signs/clues of impairment.

The next-of-kin HAS been notified.  THI officers Satterlee, Green and Slover responded.  Forensics and VA notified.

This is the SECOND traffic fatality in the year of 2014.
