Cape Coral Police Work Serious Injury Crash Involving ATV

 

(April 28, 2014)-  Sunday night at around 7:00 PM, Cape Coral Police responded to the 2300 block of SW 50th Ln., Cape Coral, on a serious injury crash.  The crash involved a single rider on an ATV who lost control, striking a mailbox and a tree.  The rider sustained life-threatening injuries and was air-lifted to Lee Memorial Hospital.  Alcohol is a factor in this crash.  Due to the severity of the injuries sustained, Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigator (THI), Forensics, and Victims' Advocates responded. Below is the preliminary synopsis of the THI:

VEHICLE 1: Blue Yamaha ATV
DRIVER 1: Andrew Casey Baldwin, 4-25-81, W/M, 2223 SW 50 Lane, Cape Coral, Florida 33914.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Baldwin suffered life threatening injuries.

SYNOPSIS:  Baldwin traveled West on his ATV in the residential neighborhood on SW 50 Lane.  Baldwin accelerated rapidly (at least 30 mph) and lost control of his vehicle.  The vehicle veered left, turned sideways, and struck a mailbox.  The ATV rolled over and Baldwin struck the driveway of 2316 SW 50 Lane with his head and continued West where he and the ATV struck a palm tree (final rest).  Baldwin was located against the tree with the ATV on top of him.

Lee County EMS trauma alerted Baldwin to Lee Memorial Hospital via Medstar helicopter.  At Lee Memorial Hospital, staff advised that Baldwin suffered massive head and internal injuries.  Baldwin is currently listed in critical condition.  Baldwin had a medical blood alcohol level of 0.340.

Baldwin was not wearing any safety gear during the time of the traffic crash.  Due to injury severity, THI Satterlee, Forensics, and VA responded to the scene.

Case is pending further investigation.  Next-of-kin was on scene and observed the traffic crash.
