Cape Coral Police Department Investigates Serious Injury Crash

(July 2, 2014)-  Yesterday at around 5:15 PM, Cape Coral Police Department responded on a serious traffic crash involving a pickup truck and a bicycle in the area of El Dorado Parkway W. and SW 5th Avenue.

Due to the severity of the collision, Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Homicide investigators and Forensics responded and took over the investigation from Patrol. 

The initial synopsis of the Traffic Homicide Investigator is below:

DATE: July 1, 2014
TIME: 5:18 p.m.
LOCATION: El Dorado Parkway West / Southwest 5th Avenue
CR: 14-010692
ASSIGNED OFFICER: Corporal Nickolas J. Slover

VEHICLE # 1: A White 2007 Ford F-150, Florida License Plate #E731ZW.
VEHICLE # 1 DRIVER: Joseph P. Murphy, W/M, DOB March 24, 1947, of Cape Coral, Florida33914.
DRIVER # 1 INJURIES: Murphy reported no injuries at the time of the traffic crash.

BICYCLE: Cervelo
PEDESTRIAN # 1: John W. Steakley Jr., W/M, DOB November 3, 1961, of Cape Coral, Florida.  
PEDESTRIAN # 1 INJURIES: Steakley suffered serious bodily injuries due to the traffic crash and was air lifted to Lee Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert. Later at the hospital, Steakley's injuries remained serious however not life threatening.   

SYNOPSIS:

According to the driver of Vehicle # 1, he had backed out of his driveway, continued in reverse on El Dorado Parkway West, and backed on to Southwest 5th Avenue were he came to a stop.  The driver stated that he saw Pedestrian # 1 riding his bicycle East bound, and all of a sudden, Pedestrian # 1 struck the right rear side. 

According to the driver of the bicycle, Pedestrian # 1, he was riding his bicycle East bound on El Dorado Parkway West.  Pedestrian # 1 stated that he noticed Vehicle # 1 back out of his driveway and believed that the driver of Vehicle # 1 would place the vehicle drive and drive forward away (East bound).  Pedestrian # 1 stated that the driver of Vehicle # 1 kept on reversing, which caused the driver of bicycle to make an emergency maneuver to the right. 

Due to severity of the injuries, Traffic Homicide Investigator Corporal Nickolas Slover, along with Forensics Technician Buckner responded. Due to the conflicting stories and no independent witnesses this case is pending further investigation. Next-of-kin has been notified.
