Delayed Traffic Fatality Increases 2013 Statistics
(July 4, 2014)- On July 2, 2014, the Cape Coral Police Department was notified by the Medical Examiner’s Office in reference to a delayed traffic fatality.
On September 2, 2013 a traffic crash occurred at Del Prado Boulevard and SE 40 Street where the front passenger in the at fault vehicle, Peter Haren, suffered serious injuries.
On April 20, 2014, Peter Haren died. The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that the traffic crash was a contributing cause to his death, and is now being listed as a Traffic Fatality.
Based on this new fatality, the updated Traffic Fatalities for 2013 are as follows:
2013= 19 Traffic fatalities (this number DOES NOT INCLUDE 2 medical ruled deaths).

LOCATION: Del Prado Boulevard and SE 40 Street
VEHICLE 1: 2001 silver Nissan Altima.
DRIVER 1: Nora C. Haren, W/F, Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Nora Haren suffered several non-life threatening injuries in the traffic crash.
PASSENGER 1: Peter A. Haren, W/M, Cape Coral, Florida.
PASSENGER 1 INJURIES: Peter Haren suffered life threatening injuries in the traffic crash.
VEHICLE 2: 2000 black Honda Civic.
DRIVER 2: Travis J. Gustavsen, W/M, Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Gustavsen suffered minor injuries in the traffic crash.
Vehicle 1 was traveling North on Del Prado Boulevard in the left lane. Vehicle 2 was traveling South on Del Prado Boulevard in the left lane. At the intersection of SE 40 Street (China Buffet restaurant there), Vehicle 1 began to turn left across Del Prado Boulevard. Vehicle 1 turned directly into the path of Vehicle 2, causing Vehicle 2 to strike Vehicle 1 on the passenger door (T-bone). Both vehicle spun clockwise and came to rest in the South lanes of Del Prado Boulevard.
The front passenger of Vehicle 1 was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries, as was the driver of Vehicle 1. The driver of Vehicle 2 suffered minor injuries and was transported to Cape Coral Hospital.
There are no signs/clues of impairment. The passenger of Vehicle 2 is listed in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital. THI Satterlee and Forensics responded.
