Cape Coral Police Department Investigating Serious Injury Crash
That Shut Down Midpoint Bridge This Morning
(July 8, 2014)- For 5 hours today, Cape Coral Police Department personnel investigated a multi-car, serious bodily injury crash near the base of the Midpoint bridge. The crash completely shut down all Eastbound traffic from Cape Coral at the height of the morning commute, well past the lunch rush. Numerous injuries were reported. One person remains in critical condition at this hour. The initial synopsis of the Traffic Homicide Investigator is below:
DATE: July 8, 2014
TIME: 7:44 a.m.
LOCATION: 2200 block Veterans Parkway East, CR 884
ASSIGNED OFFICER: Corporal Nickolas J. Slover
VEHICLE # 1: A white 2006 Ford E250 Van.
VEHICLE # 1 DRIVER: Jose D. Domenech, W/M, DOB- November 9, 1978 of Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER # 1 INJURIES: Domenech suffered injuries as a result of the traffic crash and was transported to a local hospital.
VEHICLE # 2: A black 2001 Harely Davidson Motorcyle.
VEHICLE # 2 DRIVER: ** NOT VERIFIED - NOT FOR RELEASE **
DRIVER # 2 INJURIES: DRIVER 2 suffered serious bodily injuries due to the traffic crash and was trauma alerted to a local hospital were he remains in critical condition. * * Due to the ongoing medical attention, DRIVER 2 identity was unable to be verified at this time. * *
VEHICLE # 3: A black 2011 Toyota Camry.
VEHICLE # 3 DRIVER: Lee G. Jennings, M, DOB- August 22, 1972 of Cape Coral, Florida.
VEHICLE # 3 INJURIES: Jennings suffered injuries as a result of the traffic crash and was transported to a local hospital.
VEHICLE # 4: A silver Mitsubishi Galant.
VEHICLE # 4 DRIVER: Paula E. Berg, W/F, DOB - October 15, 1951 of Cape Coral, Florida.
VEHICLE # 4 INJURIES: Berg suffered injuries as a result of the traffic crash and was transported to a local hospital.
VEHICLE # 5: A white 2005 Chevrolet 3500 Pickup/Work Truck.
VEHICLE # 5 DRIVER: Myles C. Cope 2nd, W/M, DOB-09/15/1988 of Punta Gorda, Florida.
VEHICLE # 5 INJURIES: Cope suffered injuries as a result of the traffic crash.
VEHICLE # 5 PASSENGER: James S. Sawyer, W/M, DOB- August 21, 1987 of Punta Gorda, Florida.
VEHICLE # 5 PASSENGER INJURIES: Sawyer reported no injuries at the time of the traffic crash.
Vehicle # 1 was East bound on Veterans Parkway East in the inside lane behind Vehicle # 2.
Vehicle # 2 was East bound on Veterans Parkway East in the inside lane behind Vehicle # 3.
Vehicle # 3 was East bound on Veterans Parkway East in the inside lane behind Vehicle # 4.
Vehicle # 4 was East bound on Veterans Parkway East in the inside lane behind Vehicle # 5.
Vehicle # 5 was East bound on Veterans Parkwy East in the inside lane.
At approxiatley the 2200 block of Veterans Parkway East, Vehicle's # 3, 4, and 5 were stopped for traffic, Vehicle # 2 was slowing to a stop. The driver of Vehicle # 1 could not stop in time and struck Vehicle # 2 in the rear end which caused a chain reaction. Vehicle # 2 was propelled forward, striking and lodging itself into the rear of Vehicle # 3. Vehicle # 3 was then propelled forward and struck Vehicle # 4 in the rear end, at which time, Vehicle # 3 also began to spin counterclockwise, striking the concrete barrier with its front end and again striking the rear end of Vehicle #4 with its rear right side, prior to coming to final rest facing Northwest in the inside lane. After being struck by Vehicle #3, Vehicle # 4 was propelled forward and struck the rear end of Vehicle # 5. Both Vehicles #4 and #5 came to thier final rest in the inside lane. While the chain reaction was occurring, Vehicle # 1 veered right and overturned onto the vehicles right side, while overturning Vehicle # 1 struck Vehicle # 4 on the rear right side before coming to final rest in the outside lane.
Due to severity of the injuries, MCI Corporal Nickolas Slover and Officer Nicholas Green, along with Forensics Technician Lansky responded. Drugs and Alcohol ARE NOT a factor in this traffic crash. Next-of-kin has been notified. This investigation is pending further investigation at this time.
This traffic crash scene was a great show of teamwork between the Cape Coral Police Department and the Lee County Sheriffs Department, who assisted us greatly.
