NEWS RELEASE: HAZMAT Situation Temporarily Closes Cape Coral Police Department Lobby
(September 12, 2014)- The Cape Coral Police Department lobby and front parking lot are temporarily closed as a precaution as a potential hazardous materials call is being handled by Cape Coral Police and Fire Units.
Earlier this afternoon a person came to the Cape Coral Police Department lobby to report that he received a suspicious package in the mail at his place of business. The package was a letter that contained a crystalline substance. The complainant packaged the letter in a plastic bag and brought it here to the Cape Coral Police Department lobby to turn in to Police.
The person and package was immediately brought outside to the courtyard of the PD headquarters. Cape Coral Police Department and Cape Coral Fire Department are treating this as a possible hazardous materials situation. The front parking lot to the PD is closed and walk-in services here at the PD- Fingerprinting, reports, and the volunteer info desk, are closed for the time being.
HAZMAT personnel are currently securing the package and assessing the need for decontamination procedures.Since this case involved the Postal Service, the Postal inspector and FBI have been notified. The FBI is responding to the Cape Coral Police Department.
While there is no immediate danger to the public, this call, with all of the emergency vehicles, will draw the attention of onlookers, so drivers in the area should be careful.
