(September 29, 2014)-  Yesterday afternoon, Cape Coral Police responded to a serious injury crash in the 600 block of Diplomat Parkway East.  The crash involved a single motor vehicle and a bicycle.  Occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, but the bicyclist died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.  Cape Coral Police Patrol, Traffic Homicide Investigator, and Forensics personnel responded to the scene.  The preliminary synopsis of the crash is below:

LOCATION: 600-block Diplomat Parkway East  

VEHICLE 1: 2002 Chevrolet Corvette, 2 Door Convertible.
DRIVER 1: Jason William Stewart, W/M  June 17, 1970, Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Stewart suffered minor injuries.

PASSENGER 1: Frank Christopher Sprague, W/M, April 24, 1977, Cape Coral, Florida.
PASSENGER 1 INJURIES: Sprague suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.

PROPERTY DAMAGE (BICYCLE): Scott Foil Bicycle
OPERATOR OF BICYCLE: William Scott Johnsen, W/M August 27, 1954, Cape Coral, Florida.
OPERATOR OF BICYCLE INJURIES: Johnsen died on scene due to injuries suffered in the traffic crash.

SYNOPSIS:

Vehicle # 1, driven by Jason William Stewart, was traveling East bound in the outside lane on Diplomat Parkway East in the 600 block.

The bicycle, driven by William Scott Johnsen, was traveling East bound in the outside lane on Diplomat Parkway East in the 600 Block.

 Vehicle # 1 struck the bicyclist in the rear end with the front right side of the vehicle, causing Johnsen to be ejected off the bicycle and thrown on to the windshield of Vehicle # 1. Vehicle # 1 then left the roadway after impact and continued eastbound in the vacant field.  Prior to reentering the roadway, Johnsen was ejected off Vehicle # 1.  Vehicle # 1 entered back onto Diplomat Parkway East and the driver lost control of the vehicle.  Vehicle # 1 moved diagonally in a northeast direction crossing the East bound lanes, median, westbound lanes, and entered a vacant field north of Diplomat Parkway East, prior to coming to stop.  After stopping the driver of Vehicle # 1 drove through the field and came to a final rest right before entering the West bound lanes of Diplomat Parkway East.

Johnsen died on scene due to the injuries suffered in the traffic crash.

 Due to the injuries Traffic Homicide Investigator Corporal N. Slover and Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer N. Green, Forensic Tech Buckner, and VA Pena responded.

 A Traffic Homicide Investigation is ongoing and it appears alcohol/drugs ARE NOT a factor in this traffic crash at this time.  The next-of-kin HAS BEEN notified. The bicyclist WAS wearing a helmet and had safety lights on at the time of the traffic crash.

 ***There are 5 traffic fatalities in our city in 2014. (There are 0 fatalities that are ruled "medical" and the cause of death is not related to injuries in the traffic crash. The 0 "medical" fatalities are not included in the number of 3 traffic fatalities).***
