(October 21, 2015)- Cape Coral Police are still actively investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in the parking lot of a RaceTrac gas station on Del Prado Boulevard S., earlier this afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Donnell L. Strum, W/M, 83, of Cape Coral, Florida.

TIME: 1:59 PM
LOCATION: RaceTrac (2607 Del Prado Boulevard South)
ASSIGNED MCI: M/Cpl. Andrew Satterlee
VEHICLE 1: Mid 2000’s Blue Dodge Ram truck, quad cab, aluminum ladder in bed of truck, tinted windows, Florida tag.
DRIVER 1: 30’s year old black male, short cut hair, green faded t-shirt with yellow writing, khaki colored pants.
PEDESTRIAN: Donnell L. Strum, W/M, 83, of Cape Coral, Florida.
PEDESTRIAN INJURIES: Strum died on scene due to injuries suffered in the traffic crash.
SYNOPSIS: Vehicle 1 completed fueling up at a gas pump in front of the business. A Pedestrian was walking out of the front doors of the business and headed toward the gas pumps. Vehicle 1 drove East in the parking lot and made a left turn. While turning, the front of Vehicle 1 struck the Pedestrian head on. Vehicle 1 knocked the Pedestrian to the ground and drove over him causing fatal injuries. Vehicle 1 stopped approximately 20 feet away. A black male, described as being in his 30’s with short cut hair, wearing a green shirt (faded) with yellow writing and khaki colored pants; exited the driver’s seat and looked back at the Pedestrian on the ground. Witnesses advised that they yelled that the driver ran over the Pedestrian. The driver immediately got back into his truck and fled the scene East onto SE 26 Street. Vehicle 1 was being followed by a witness when it drove West on Everest Parkway and then through a parking lot of a business. Vehicle 1 then exited a parking lot by driving over two dirt mounds and the sidewalk where it turned East onto the Veterans Memorial Parkway on-ramp. Vehicle 1 then drove East toward Fort Myers and out of Cape Coral.
On scene, the Pedestrian died at 2:08 PM. The Pedestrian was identified as Donnell L. Strum, 83. The Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of Strum. Cape Coral Police Department Victim Advocate and Sgt. Kulko of the Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Unit assisted with making next-of-kin notification. Forensics and MCI Officers Satterlee and Green responded.
It is unknown if this traffic crash is alcohol/drug related. An active criminal Traffic Homicide Investigation is being conducted.
***There have been 13 traffic fatalities and 38 MCI usages in our city in 2015. (There has been 1 fatality that has been ruled "medical" and the cause of death is not related to injuries in the traffic crash. This 1 "medical" fatality is not included in the number of traffic fatalities).***
