(March 18, 2015)-  Today, the Cape Coral Police Department unveiled its new fleet of BMW Motorcycles for the Traffic Unit.

With the purchase of the BMW R-1200-RT-P Authority Motorcycle, the City of Cape Coral embarked in a five year plan to utilize these motorcycles as an integral part of the CCPD Traffic Unit’s initiative to thwart aggressive driving, reduce traffic crashes, curtail traffic homicides, and keep the citizens of this city safe as they travel to and from their destinations.

In the past, the Cape Coral Police Department would lease Harley Davidson Police Motorcycles for two years and turn them back in to the leasing agent.  At the start and end of each lease, the Department would have to pay to have the Police equipment installed and uninstalled on the Police Motorcycle and then reinstalled onto the new Police motorcycle.  This would cost about $700-1000 per motorcycle to have this done.  Also, at the end of the lease, we would not have anything left, but lease payment receipts.

Now, the Cape Coral Police Department will own these Police Motorcycles and will only have to pay to have the Police equipment installed and remove one time over the next five years (2.5 times with the Harley lease).

Major benefits of the 2015 BMW R-1200-RT-P Authority are:

  • Better fuel economy (40-60 mpg / competitor 28-32 mpg)
  • Less required maintenance (every 6000 miles / competitor every 2500 miles)
  • Lighter overall weight (approx. 250 lb.)
  • Traction Control (prevents tire slippage)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring (safety to rider)
  • Integrated ABS brakes
  • Comfortable riding position
  • Cooler running engine (water cooled) – will keep rider cooler during summer months

Emergency Lighting and comfort:

  • Lights at the driver’s eye level
  • LED – visible over .9 miles away
  • Take Down Lights
  • Alley Lights
  • Running Lights
  • Wireless Headsets
  • Heated grips and seats – for those cool winter mornings.

“This is the culmination of almost 3 years of testing and evaluation.  The partnership with BMW allows us to field a smaller, lighter, more maneuverable, cooler bike, that is packed with the newest technology to keep our officers safe.  These motorcycles will be an important part of our ongoing efforts to increase safety on the roads in Cape Coral. All of these benefits come at an overall cost savings to the taxpayer at almost $5000 per bike.”- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.
