(April 8, 2015)- Last night around 8:00 PM, Cape Coral Police responded to the Target located at 1890 NE Pine Island Road on a discharge of firearm call.
Officers responded and quickly learned that a customer had an apparent unintentional discharge of a firearm inside the store. Surveillance video showed that after the customer checked out at a register, she was putting something into her purse when a firearm discharged from inside of the purse. The round ricocheted off the floor and went into the ceiling. No one was injured, but floor tiles and the ceiling sustained damage.
The customer was described as a black female in her 30's wearing a blue shirt and carrying a white purse. After the discharge, she quickly left the store and got into a silver Hyundai. She was last seen heading eastbound on Pine Island Road. She was gone prior to the arrival of Officers and was not located last evening. Charges may still be pending for the damage to property, depending on what the victim (Target) wishes to pursue.
"We are glad that this incident didn't turn into a tragedy. We want to remind people who choose to carry a concealed firearm that carrying a gun loose in a pocket, purse, or bag is never a good idea. Always carry a firearm in a quality holster that covers the trigger guard and if you choose to cary in a bag or purse, we suggest using a model that is purpose-built for firearms."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.
