SYNOPSIS: Three juvenile bicyclists (15-17 years old) were riding their bicycles North on El Dorado Boulevard in the left lane (instead of the right lane). All three bicycles had no front or rear lights, and all riders were not wearing helmets. Vehicle 1 was driving North on El Dorado Boulevard in the inside lane heading home. According to the driver of Vehicle 1, he dropped a drink out of his right hand and bent over to the right to pick up the can as he drove North. When he looked back up, the bicyclist was directly in front of him. Vehicle 1 braked and pulled left but struck the bicyclist. Vehicle 1 came to rest in the paved median at the intersection with NW 2 Street with the bicyclist underneath the vehicle. Vehicle 1 was backed up and the bicyclist was removed.
The bicyclist suffered obvious head trauma and was transported by ambulance to Lee Memorial Hospital (where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit). The driver of Vehicle 1 did not suffer injuries.
Evidence was located on Vehicle 1 and in the roadway (skid and scuff marks) that places the bicycle 32 inches from the fog line into the inside North lane of El Dorado Boulevard. The bicyclist was required to be driving in the outside lane as close to the outside curb as possible. It was further determined that the bicyclist had dark clothing, there was no lighting in the area, and the bicycle had no rear or front lights. The bicycle was equipped with 1 small rear red reflector. The bicycle was a modified bicycle which also caused the rider to sit very low to the ground.
Due to injuries, MCI Satterlee and Forensics responded. The next of kin for the juvenile victim HAS BEEN notified. This traffic crash does NOT involve alcohol/drugs. The bicyclist is listed in stable condition and has been admitted into the hospital for observation.
