(August 11, 2015)- Responders heading to a lunchtime crash on Del Prado Boulevard found something more tragic and out of the ordinary when they arrived.
Just after 11:00 AM, a white male, later identified as Todd W. Jenkins, 49, was seen driving north on Del Prado Blvd in the outside lane. A witness stated that the vehicle was traveling extremely slowly, and the driver was slumped over, behind the wheel.
The vehicle came to a stop in front of 1437 Del Prado Blvd S. Seeing the vehicle stop, the witness/Good Samaritan gained entry to the vehicle and, finding that the driver was unresponsive, removed him from the vehicle and started CPR.
Cape Coral Fire Department and LCEMS arrived on scene and took over CPR. However, the driver was ultimately declared deceased at the scene. Major Crash Investigator Satterlee and Forensics personnel responded to the scene. Once it was determined that there was no traffic crash, the scene was worked as a death investigation (natural causes). Cape Coral Police Department Victim Advocate was notified and made contact with next of kin.
The scene caused a visual slow-down along the Del Prado corridor for over two hours. A Ping4alert was sent warning drivers along Del Prado to avoid the area.
"Our thoughts go out to the family of Mr. Jenkins. In light of this tragedy, we are thankful that the situation unfolded in the way that it did and that no one else was injured. Often times when drivers suffer medical events behind the wheel, it results in a serious crash."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.
