(January 1, 2016)- The Cape Coral Police Department conducted a High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) traffic saturation operation Thursday night, the first operation since being awarded a second grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
The Cape Coral Police Department Traffic Unit deployed a 3-officer squad to conduct a city-wide traffic saturation operation, focused on impaired drivers. According to Sergeant Patrick O'Grady, what the Officers saw both surprised and delighted them. "People were taking cabs, Uber, and using designated drivers. There were a lot of cars left in the bar parking lots last night. The voluntary compliance we were seeing was really off the charts."
That's not to say that there were no DUI arrests were made. The Saturation operation yielded one DUI arrest. The Patrol Bureau made two arrests for DUI in the South District that were not related to this operation.
Grant-funded operations will continue throughout 2016.
The results of the operations are below:
ARRESTED: Jorge Acosta, W/M, DOB: 01-02-81, of 7835 Bogart Ave., North fort Myers, FL.
CHARGES: DUI, DUI w/Property damage, No Valid DL
LOCATION: 400 Pine Island Rd SW.
Acosta was driving westbound on Pine Island Rd approaching Nicholas Pkwy. In his condition he was unable to stop his vehicle in time and rear ended a vehicle that was slowing for the red light at Nicholas Pkwy. Sgt. O’Grady arrived on the scene and spoke with Acosta. Signs of impairment were seen. After Ofc. Gray completed the traffic crash investigation a DUI investigation was completed. Ofc. Rosas translated from English to Spanish. At the completion, Acosta completed field sobriety evaluations and gave two breath samples showing a BAC of .262 and .265.
