(January 10, 2016)-   We know these are trying times for the citizens of Cape Coral, especially those most affected by the tornado damage in the SW area of the Cape.  Even though it's tough to see the devastation the tornado caused, it is great to see the neighbors coming together to give each other a helping hand in the clean-up process.

We ask the public who do not reside in the area to completely avoid Beach Pkwy between Chiquita and Sands Blvd and any other areas damaged by the severe weather event.  There is heavy traffic in the area that is slowing down the process for the multiple crews and residents trying to clean up their neighborhoods and get powered restored.

We want to restore some normalcy back to our citizens as quickly as possible.  If you need Red Cross assistance please call 239-278-3401.  The American Red Cross will have a shelter open at Faith Presbyterian Church of Cape Coral, located at 4544 Coronado Pkwy, Cape Coral.  The shelter will open at 5:00 PM today, January 10th.  The church telephone number is 239-542-2858.

City of Cape Coral Officials have toured the heavily damage areas in the SW part of Cape Coral.  There is a lot of work to be done and this is not going to be resolved overnight.  Cape Coral Police will continue to have additional officers in the area today and in the overnight hours to protect people and property.  Police are still checking identifications to only allow homeowners and tenants to enter the area.

The Cape Coral Police Department urges citizens to assume that all downed power lines are dangerous and to keep your distance.  Homeowners using generators should be aware of carbon monoxide fumes.  Please do not use generators inside the home or garage, only in well ventilated areas outside of the home. At this time there have not been any boil water notices.

Early estimates are showing over 6 million in damages and over 200 homes with light to severe damage.

General questions can be answered by Citizen Action Center at 239-574-0425.  There will be a designated line for permits for Community Development - 239-574-0551.  This line will be operational at 9 AM on Monday, January 11th, 2016.
