(October 21, 2016)- Cape Coral Police made an arrest this afternoon related to a fatal April 10th traffic crash.
On October 21, 2016, Michael John Getts (DOB: 1-23-81) met with Cape Coral Police Traffic Homicide Investigator Master Corporal A. Satterlee outside the Lee County Jail, where he was placed under arrest on multiple charges stemming from a three vehicle traffic crash that occurred on April 10th at the 2400 block of NE Pine Island Road. This crash resulted in the death of the passenger in Getts' vehicle.
Getts was charged with the following crimes:
- DUI Manslaughter
- Vehicular Manslaughter
- DUI Causing Personal injury
- DUI Causing Property Damage
- DUI with BAC Over 0.150
The synopsis of the Traffic Homicide Investigation is below:
On April 10, 2016 at 11:12 pm, Getts (Vehicle 1) was driving his vehicle east on NE Pine Island Road in the 2400 block in the outside lane. Vehicle 2 was traveling east ahead of Vehicle 1 in the inside lane. In the 2400 block, Vehicle 1 entered into the inside lane and crashed into Vehicle 2 causing both vehicles to go off the south edge of the roadway. Vehicle 2 rolled over and came to final rest on its roof and caught on fire. Vehicle 1 entered a ditch and then struck a tree on the driver’s side. Debris from the crash struck a motorcycle driving west on NE Pine Island Road (Vehicle 3). The driver of Vehicle 3 stopped, ran to Vehicle 2, kicked out the window, and removed the driver to safety. The driver of Vehicle 3 then went to Vehicle 2 and removed the passenger from the vehicle to safety. The driver of Vehicle 1 was pinned inside of the vehicle.
All occupants were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. The driver of Vehicle 1 suffered multiple life threatening injuries but survived. The passenger in Vehicle 1 died due to injuries suffered in the traffic crash. The driver of Vehicle 2 suffered life threatening injuries but survived.
During the investigation it was determined that the driver of Vehicle 1 had a medical blood alcohol content of 0.209. A search warrant was obtained for the Event Data Recorder (EDR- black box) from Vehicle 1. After downloading the EDR data, it was further determined that Vehicle 1 was traveling in excess of 100 mph at the time of the traffic crash.
On October 21, 2016 the driver of Vehicle 1 was met outside the Lee County Jail where he was placed under arrest for the above charges (with the assistance from CCPD's detective assigned to the US Marshals Task Force for jurisdictional assistance).

CHARGES: DUI Manslaughter, Vehicular Manslaughter, DUI Causing Personal Injury, DUI Causing Property Damage, DUI with Blood Alcohol Content Above 0.150
