(October 3, 2016)-  Cape Coral Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team participated in the 2016 Bay Area Negotiator's Seminar & Challenge on September 28th and 29th in Brandon, Florida.

The Cape Coral Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) tied for 4th place with Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, in what was the first Crisis Negotiation Team competition in the history of the Cape Coral Police Department.

The agencies involved in the competition were as follows:

  • Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office
  • Cape Coral Police Department
  • Clearwater PD
  • Largo PD
  • MacDill AFB Security Forces
  • Jacksonville Sheriff's Office
  • Pinellas County Sheriff's Office
  • Pinellas Park PD
  • Tampa PD
  • Marion County Sheriff's Office
  • Polk County Sheriff's Office

Day 1 consisted of a seminar with guest speakers the entire day to include a SWAT team leader from Dallas PD, who was involved in their recent tragedy.

Day 2 consisted of a 6 hour scenario with 2 judges in the room at all times.  There were no breaks and it was as realistic as possible. Each team was allowed to utilize 6 team members.  Each team had the same scenario with a separate role player.  "The scenario was very realistic.  Intel gathering was done electronically, live interviews, canvassing, etc....It was the real deal," said Detective Mike McIlhargey of the Cape Coral Police Department CNT.

"The men and women of the CNT are unsung heroes of many major incidents.  People always see the SWAT team and vehicles, but often are unaware of the behind-the-scenes-work our Negotiators are doing to help bring many of these situations to a peaceful resolution. We are very proud of the team's showing," Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer.
