(April 24, 2016)-  Cape Coral Police are investigating a fatal crash that shut down part of Del Prado Boulevard for several hours this morning.

Around 9:30 AM, Cape Coral Police responded to a 2-vehicle crash in the 600 block of Del Prado Boulevard North.

Investigation revealed that a vehicle that as traveling northbound on Del Prado Boulevard ran a red light at NE 6th St., striking another vehicle that was making a left turn at the intersection.  The drivers of both vehicles sustained injuries in this crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

One driver, Harry Carroll Wilson, W/M, 93, of Cape Coral, later died at the hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Cape Coral Police Department Patrol, Major Crash Investigator, Forensics, and Victim Advocates responded to the scene.  The roadway was closed through 1:00 PM during the investigation.  The investigation is ongoing.

VEHICLE 1: 1998 white Dodge Caravan.
DRIVER 1: Carl Olof Reijer, W/M, 29, of Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Reijer suffered minor head injuries in the traffic crash.

VEHICLE 2: 1999 grey Nissan Sentra.
DRIVER 2: Harry Carroll Wilson, W/M, 93, of Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Wilson died at a local hospital due to injuries suffered in the traffic crash.

SYNOPSIS:  Vehicle 2 was driving southbound on Del Prado Boulevard and stopped in the East turn lane at the intersection of NE 6 Street.  Vehicle 1 was northbound on Del Prado Boulevard in the inside lane.  According to multiple witnesses, Vehicle 2 began its left turn onto NE 6 Street.  Two witnesses were stopped in the outside northbound lane of Del Prado Boulevard at the light of NE 6 Street.  These witnesses stated that northbound traffic had a red light.  The witnesses saw Vehicle 1 run the red light.  The front of Vehicle 1 struck the front of Vehicle 2 head on.  Vehicle 1 was redirected to the Northeast and drove off the roadway and struck a traffic signal box and came to final rest in a parking lot nearby.  Vehicle 2 was spun counter clockwise and came to rest in the inside northbound lane of Del Prado Boulevard, on the North side of the intersection.

On scene the driver of Vehicle 1 suffered minor head injuries and was transported to a local hospital.  The driver of Vehicle 2 suffered life threatening injuries and was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital.  Due to injuries, THI Satterlee, Forensics personnel, and a Victim Advocate responded.

At 10:13 am, the driver of Vehicle 2 died at the hospital due to injuries suffered in the traffic crash.  This traffic crash IS NOT alcohol/drug related.  The next-of-kin HAS BEEN notified.  Del Prado Boulevard (both directions) was closed down for several hours for the investigation (re-opened at 1:15 pm).  A Traffic Homicide Investigation is being conducted.
