(July 16, 2016)- A drunk driver who slammed into a South Cape Coral home last night got quite a surprise when the Good Samaritan who helped him was none other than Interim Chief of Police Dave Newlan.
Last night, Gregory Fischer, 43, was driving his vehicle, southbound on Skyline Boulevard, at a high rate of speed. Fischer drove through the stop sign at El Dorado Parkway and crashed into the front of the house at 800 El Dorado Parkway W. Thankfully, the residents were not home, but there was significant damage to the house.
Chief Newlan, who was off duty at the time, was at a nearby residence and heard the crash. He and several neighbors in the immediate area walked to the crash scene to assist. While at the scene, Chief Newlan ended up detaining Fischer until Patrol officers arrived.
Fischer, who could not perform field sobriety evaluations, and was arrested by Corporal Satterlee for DUI and DUI with property damage. The residents were contacted by phone and the building inspector responded to the scene. A Ping4 alert was sent, warning neighbors and drivers in the area.
