(January 6, 2017) - A pair of local reporters became the story when an irate man tried to run them over with a car while they were shooting a story.
Officers responded to a disturbance at 617 SW 11th Terrace that involved Walter Crappse and members of the WINK News team.
The investigation revealed that the reporter and cameraman went to 617 SW 11th Terrace to interview a subject who had been previously arrested for Child Abuse and wanted to interview her. The female did not want to talk to the news crew and the female’s son, Walter Crappse, was yelling obscenities out the window and screaming for them to get off of their property.
The reporter and cameraman went to a neighbor’s house across the street to interview them about the arrest. Crappse exited his residence and continued yelling at the reporter and cameraman. Crappse then got into his vehicle which was parked in the driveway, put it in reverse and started backing out of the driveway, angling the vehicle in the direction of the reporter and cameraman who were across the street. Crappse then put the vehicle in drive and accelerated toward the victims at a high rate of speed.
Crappse drove his vehicle over the grass trying to strike the victims with his vehicle. The cameraman jumped out of the way of the vehicle, but the reporter was struck on the right side of her body and her right wrist. The reporter did not sustain serious injury and refused medics. The WINK News microphone was also damaged. Crapsee drove off at a high rate of speed but returned shortly afterwards and went back inside of his residence. The entire incident was captured on the WINK News video camera.
Cape Coral Police Detectives and Forensics responded to assist with the investigation and collect evidence. Based on physical and testimonial evidence, detectives arrested Crappse for Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault and Criminal Mischief.
