(May 4, 2017)-  A four-car crash yesterday afternoon sent four people to the hospital and snarled traffic on Cape Coral Parkway for hours.

Yesterday around 2:10 PM, Cape Coral Police responded to a multi-car crash at the intersection of Palm Tree Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway East.  Arriving officers found multiple people who had sustained injuries, with one in life-threatening condition.  

Patrol, Traffic Unit Major Crash Investigator, Forensics and Victim Advocates responded to assist.

Due to the severity of injuries, the Major Crash Investigator responded and took over the investigation.  A Ping4 alert was sent to warn drivers and resident to avoid the area.

The preliminary synopsis of the Major Crash Investigator is below:

DRIVER 1: Maria T. Pando, W/F, 86, of Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Maria Pando suffered life threatening injuries in the collision.
VEHICLE 1 PASSENGER: William Pando, W/M, 88, of Cape Coral, Florida.
VEHICLE 1 PASSENGER INJURIES: William Pando suffered serious injury in the collision.

VEHICLE 2: 2014 silver Kia Soul SUV.
DRIVER 2: Kevin Michael McGrath, W/M, 70, of Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Kevin McGrath suffered minor injuries in the collision.
VEHICLE 2 PASSENGER: Kathleen Mary McGrath, W/F, 69, of Cape Coral, Florida.
VEHICLE 2 PASSENGER INJURIES: Kathleen McGrath suffered minor injuries in the collision.

DRIVER 3: Daniel Nils Bjorn Wilhelm Wennlind, W/M, 43, of Askloster, Sweden.
DRIVER 3 INJURIES: Daniel Wennlind was not injured in the collision.
VEHICLE 3 PASSENGER 1: Gabriel Wennlind, W/M, 7, of Askloster, Sweden.
VEHICLE 3 PASSENGER 1 INJURIES: Gabriel Wennlind was not injured in the collision.
VEHICLE 3 PASSENGER 2: Kristen Samuelson, 38, of Askloster, Sweden.
VEHICLE 3 PASSENGER 2 INJURIES: Samuelson was not injured in the collision.
VEHICLE 3 PASSENGER 3: Alfred Wennlind, 3, of Askloster, Sweden.
VEHICLE 3 PASSENGER 3 INJURIES: Alfred Wennlind was not injured in the collision.

VEHICLE 4: 2017 black Ford Expedition SUV.
DRIVER 4: Tonnie Renee Drake, W/F, 55, of Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 4 INJURIES: Drake was not injured in the collision.

SYNOPSIS: Vehicle 1 was traveling west on Cape Coral Pkwy E in the outside lane approaching the intersection with Palm Tree Blvd, and came to a stop for a red light behind other stopped vehicles. Vehicle 2 was traveling east on Cape Coral Pkwy E in the center lane approaching the intersection with Palm Tree Blvd and was slowing for traffic congestion at the intersection. Vehicle 3 was traveling east on Cape Coral Pkwy E in the outside lane approaching the intersection with Palm Tree Blvd, and came to a stop for a red light. Vehicle 4 was traveling east on Cape Coral Pkwy E in the center lane approaching the intersection with Palm Tree Blvd, and behind Vehicle 2. Vehicle 1 suddenly accelerated and swerved to the right, onto the sidewalk on the north side of Cape Coral Pkwy E, and began to travel west toward the intersection. As Vehicle 1 reached the intersection of Cape Coral Pkwy E and Palm Tree Blvd, it then left the sidewalk on the northeast corner and then crossed the intersection diagonally toward the southwest. Vehicle 1 then entered the east lanes of Cape Coral Pkwy E traveling the wrong direction. The front right portion of Vehicle 1 collided with the left front portion of Vehicle 2. Vehicle 2 then rolled onto its right side and came to final rest in the east outside lane. Vehicle 1 continued into the east outside lane where its front collided with the left front quarter of Vehicle 3. Vehicle 1 came to final rest facing southwest in the east outside lane of Cape Coral Pkwy E. Vehicle 3 came to final rest straddling the east outside lane and the sidewalk on the south side of Cape Coral Pkwy E. The right front portion of Vehicle 4 was struck by Vehicle 2 as it rolled onto its side.   

The driver of Vehicle 1 sustained possible life threatening injuries in the collision and was trauma alerted to a local hospital; the passenger of Vehicle 1 suffered serious injury in the collision and was also transported to a local hospital. The driver and passenger of Vehicle 2 suffered minor injuries in the collision and were transported to a local hospital. The driver/passengers of Vehicle's 3 and 4 were not injured. Due to the injuries sustained by the driver of Vehicle 1, Officer Gray responded and conducted a major crash investigation. Victim Advocate and Forensic personnel also responded.

This crash IS NOT drug/alcohol related. The next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified for all involved.
