(June 8, 2017)-  The Cape Coral Police Major Crash Investigator is investigating a crash involving a bicyclist that sent one Cape Coral man to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

This morning at around 7:20 AM, Cape Coral Police responded to Vincennes Boulevard at SE 47th Terrace on a traffic crash involving a bicyclist and minivan.

The bicyclist, Richard Kai Rex, W/M, 80, of Cape Coral suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken as a trauma-alert to a local hospital.  Rex was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The preliminary synopsis of the Major Crash Investigator is below:

VEHICLE 1:  Red 2009 Ford Windstar minivan.
DRIVER 1: Christine Catherine Ragonese, W/F, 85, of Cape Coral, Florida.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES:  Christine Ragonese was not injured in the crash.
VEHICLE 1 PASSENGER: Patsy Vito Ragonese, W/M, 64, of Cape Coral, Florida.
VEHCLE 1 PASSENGER INJURIES: Patsy Ragonese was not injured in the crash.

VEHICLE 2: Jamis Boss bicycle
VEHICLE 2 RIDER (BICYCLIST): Richard Kai Rex, W/M, 80, of Cape Coral, Florida.
VEHICLE 2 RIDER INJURIES: Rex suffered serious injuries in the crash.

SYNOPSIS: A bicycle was driving North on a sidewalk on the west side of Vincennes Blvd approaching the intersection with SE 47th Ter. Vehicle 1 was driving west on SE 47th Ter approaching the intersection with Vincennes Blvd. The bicyclist came to a stop on the southwest corner of the intersection and checked to see that vehicles traveling east and west on SE 47th Ter were stopping. The bicycle then proceeded to ride north across the SE 47th Ter to the right of the marked crosswalk. Vehicle 1 stopped at the stop sign at the intersection and then proceeded west across the intersection.

The front of Vehicle 1 collided with the right side of the bicycle. The bicyclist was propelled over the hood and down the right side of Vehicle 1 and came to rest in the west lane of SE 47th Ter. The bicycle came to final rest in the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection. Vehicle 1 pulled into the parking lot of the businesses located at 1113 SE 47th Ter and came to a stop.

The bicyclist suffered possible life-threatening injuries and was trauma alerted to a local hospital. The driver and passenger of Vehicle 1 were not injured.

Due to the injuries to the bicyclist, MCI D. Gray responded and took over the investigation. Forensics personnel also responded.

Alcohol IS NOT a factor in this crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.
