(July 22, 2017)- A crash on Pine Island Road yesterday afternoon sent one person to the hospital and killed two others.
At around 3:20 PM, Cape Coral Police responded to the intersection of NE Pine Island Road and Commerce Creek Boulevard.
A black Volkswagen Jetta was southbound on Commerce Creek Boulevard and attempted to cross NE Pine Island Rd. The Volkswagen, driven by Justin Reed Collins, 31, of N. Ft Myers, drove into the path of an oncoming car, a blue Dodge Dakota pickup, driven by Gilberto Valentin Hernandez Jr, 20, of N. Ft Myers. The vehicles collided, crossing the median, and coming to final rest in the eastbound lanes of NE Pine Island Rd.
Collins and his passenger, Myles Cody Goss, 31, of Lantana, Florida, died at the scene. Hernandez was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Due to the severity of the crash, Major Crash Investigators, Victim Advocates, and Forensics responded to the scene. A Ping4 alert was sent alerting drivers and residents about this crash. Investigation is ongoing.

DRIVER 2: Gilberto Valentin Hernandez Jr, W/M, 20, of N. Ft Myers, Florida.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Hernandez suffered minor injuries in the crash.
SYNOPSIS: Vehicle 1 was South on Commerce Creek Boulevard S, approaching the intersection of NE Pine Island Road. Vehicle 2 was West on NE Pine Island Road in the inside lane. At the intersection, there is a posted stop sign for Vehicle 1 and no traffic control for Vehicle 2.
Vehicle 1 drove forward to cross over NE Pine Island Road and drove in front of Vehicle 2. Vehicle 2 skidded to avoid Vehicle 1 but was unable to. The front of Vehicle 2 struck the driver`s side of Vehicle 1. Vehicle 1 was forced to the West through the median and came to rest in the East lanes of NE Pine Island Road. Vehicle 2 came to rest in the West lane of NE Pine Island Road.
The driver and passenger of Vehicle 1 suffered fatal injuries on scene. The driver of Vehicle 2 suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
Due to the injuries, a Major Crash Investigation (MCI) is being conducted. It is UNKNOWN if alcohol/drugs are a factor in the traffic crash. Next-of-kin for driver of Vehicle 2 HAS BEEN notified. Next-of-kin for driver and passenger of Vehicle 1 HAVE BEEN notified.
