(July 20, 2018)- On Wednesday, July 18, 2018 officer stops car, man runs, jumps into canal and still gets caught.
A Cape Coral Police Patrol Officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign and having an equipment violation.
Once the vehicle stopped the driver, John Edwin Durlacher (W/M, DOB: 03/19/1980, 4446 Orchid Blvd), fled on foot. The officer gave chase and Durlacher threw the backpack he was wearing into the water and then he also jumped into the canal. Durlacher then swam to the middle of the canal.
Additional officers arrived on scene and Durlacher swam to a dock to get out of the water. Durlacher then removed his pants and threw them on the dock. He then climbed out of the canal and was arrested.
The backpack was recovered and a search revealed four (4) syringes as well as a Tupperware container with a white powder residue inside of that tested positive for cocaine. Inside the vehicle officer's located several pieces of crack cocaine and a crack pipe.
Durlacher was charged with Resisting Arrest without Violence, Driving on Suspended Drivers License - 3rd Offense, Possession of Cocaine, 5- counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Tampering with Evidence.
Durlacher was later transferred to the Lee County Jail.
