(March 1, 2019)-  The Cape Coral Police Department is proud to announce the retirement of K9 Oz.

Cape Coral Police K9 Oz has spent the last six years as a dual certified (drug and apprehension) K9. He has worked with his handler, Officer Christopher Gugliotta, since July 2012. 

  • Osmo “Oz” Von der Schalbal was born on 7/12/11 in Germany (sabal coat German Shepherd)

  • He was purchased by the dept in July 2012

  • Started K9 school in July 2012

  • Nicknames in school were the Tazmanian devil and El diablo due to the fact that during bite work the tips of his ears would point in the shape of devils ears lol

  • November 2012 Oz passed his first dual certification through NPCA as Patrol 2 (highest cert) and Narcotics

  • Oz acceled in narcotics, tracking, and area searches

  • Oz was very big (90 lbs) and loud therefore a great deterant for crowd control

  • He tracked in hyper speed always wanting to get to the end

  • We were put on Admin duty in June 2016 due to a shooting

  • In May 2017 Oz injured his left hind leg and was put on light duty

  • Throughout the next year from May ‘17-July ’18 Oz battled through the injury with therapy at Animal Specialty Hospital in Naples and at home and continued to work

  • The injury did not get any better and surgery could not guarantee a full recovery in July ’18 the K9 unit decided that we should retire Oz so he could have a nice life and relax at home

  • He is adjusting well to home life however still has the drive of a working dog
