(August 20, 2018) - The Cape Coral Police Department made eleven DUI arrests between August 10-20, 2018. The 2018 "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign also began on August 17th, and runs until September 3rd. Below is the information on these arrests:
A CCPD Patrol officer stopped Smith at the 3500 block of Agualinda Boulevard for driving a vehicle with front end damage, after Smith's vehicle had matched the description of a vehicle involved in a hit and run crash. Following the traffic crash investigation, a DUI investigation began due to Smith exhibiting signs of impairment. Smith performed poorly on field sobriety exercises and was placed under arrest. A CCPD Patrol officer stopped Poulin at the 2100 block of SW 32nd Street for a broken tail light, speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road. Poulin exhibited signs of impairment which initiated a DUI Investigation. Poulin performed poorly on field sobriety exercises and was placed under arrest for DUI. BAC%: .111 / .100
A wheel witness following a reckless driver led to Trammell being stopped by a CCPD Patrol officer at the intersection of Trafalgar Parkway and Surfside Boulevard. Trammell exhibited signs of impairment and performed poorly on field sobriety exercises. She was then placed under arrest for DUI. BAC%: Refused.
Beach was found by Patrol officers passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle at the intersection of SW Pine Island Road and Skyline Boulevard. The engine running and Beach's foot was on the brake pedal. Officers were able to stop the vehicle and put it into park, just before Beach narrowly missed crashing into eastbound traffic on SW Pine Island Road. Beach performed very poorly on field sobriety exercises and was arrested for DUI. BAC%: .253 / .256
Officers responded to a traffic crash at the 1300 block of NE Pine Island Road. At the end of the traffic crash investigation, the subsequent DUI investigation developed probable cause to arrest Bergstrom. BAC%: .148 / .155
A witness called CCPD in reference to an unresponsive male in the driver’s seat of a vehicle with the engine running in the Walgreen’s parking lot located at 2409 Santa Barbara Boulevard South. Contact was made with Skaff, who exhibited signs of impairment which led to a DUI investigation. Skaff performed poorly on field sobriety exercises and was arrested for DUI. In a search of Skaff's vehicle incident to arrest, officers located 0.9 grams of Xanax, 2.6 grams of Tramadol, 4.2 grams of marijuana, and a marijuana pipe. BAC%: .000 / .000; a CCPD Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was called out and determined that Skaff was under the influence of a controlled substance.
A traffic stop for speeding at the 1000 block of Del Prado Boulevard South led to a DUI investigation. Centrella refused to participate in any field sobriety exercises or a breath test. Incident to arrest a bag containing 7.9 grams of marijuana was found in the center console. BAC%: Refused.
Officers responded to a single vehicle crash where the vehicle rolled over at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard. There were no injuries and the driver (Kappenman) showed signs of impairment. A DUI investigation ensued and Kappenman could not complete the field sobriety exercises. Her driver's license was also found to be suspended. Kappenman was arrested for DUI and driving on a suspended license. Buchert was attempting to make a right turn out of a parking lot at the 1100 block of SE 47th Terrace and drove into the curb. There was no damage to the vehicle, but signs of impairment were seen in Buchert. She was arrested for DUI after completing field sobriety exercises. BAC%: .127 / .127
A CCPD Patrol officer stopped Pierce at the 1900 block of Cape Coral Parkway East for swerving all over the road, which lead to a DUI investigation. Pierce performed poorly during field sobriety exercises and was arrested. BAC%: Refused.
Polito was called in as a reckless driver driving southbound in the northbound lanes at the 1400 block of Del Prado Boulevard North. She left the roadway and struck a light pole on the east side of the roadway. After striking the light pole, she crossed all the way to the west side of the road where she then struck a tree and came to final rest. A DUI investigation was conducted after the crash investigation and she was arrested. BAC%: .000 / .000; a CCPD Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was called out and determined that Kappenman was under the influence of a controlled substance. A search of Polito's vehicle incident to arrest discovered multiple prescription pills.
