(February 13, 2019)-  On January 25, 2019, Island Coast High School SRO D. Zelko was made aware of a threat to one of the students.

A parent came to Island Coast High School to report that her son had received a threatening video message via Snapchat. In the video, Reid Leaton Cross Jr. (W/M, DOB: 12/04/2003) was holding what appeared to be a firearm and threatened to kill the other student.

The Cape Coral Police Major Crimes Unit Detectives Malone and Kortright took over the investigation. It was determined that Cross did send a Snapchat video and written message to a fellow student. The firearm that was used in the video was found to be a BB gun that had the orange tip colored black with a marker.

Cross Jr. was charged with a Written Threat to Kill.

He was later transferred to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

This crime is a 2nd degree felony! Another consequence of these school threats is the investigative cost recovery which can be a significant monetary amount assessed by a judge against the defendant if convicted. If the investigative cost recovery is not paid it can violate the defendant’s probation which can lead to another arrest. These threats have lasting consequences.

“Our children’s safety is our first priority and we take every threat seriously. Each one will be investigated thoroughly and we will arrest the violators.” ~ Chief Dave Newlan
