(February 5, 2019)-  On February 4, 2019 Mariner High School learned of a school shooting threat that was written on the wall in one of the boys bathrooms. The threat was written in a black permanent marker and stated "Shoot Up Feb 14".  The principal was informed of the threat by a student who wished to remain anonymous.  According to that student a photo of the threat was being sent via Snapchat.  The student informed Principal Michel that the photo of the threat was sent by Christen Joseph Nieves (W/M, DOB: 12/20/2002). School Resource Officer Chris Lucas immediately got involved and began an investigation.

On February 5, 2019 around 8:30 AM, Detective Nicholas Jones of the Cape Coral Police Department Major Crimes Unit responded to Mariner High School to continue with the school shooting threat investigation. A check of the school surveillance video revealed that Nieves did enter the bathroom where the threat was located that day around 11:32 AM. Nieves was in the bathroom for approximately two minutes and then left.

Based on the entire investigation by the Community Services Bureau and the Major Crimes Unit, probable cause existed that Christen Nieves did write a threat to commit a mass shooting in a manner to allow others to view the threat and did intentionally damage the property of another valued at less than $200.

Nieves was placed under arrest for Written Threat to Conduct a Mass Shooting and Criminal Mischief. He was later transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

“These fake threats will not be tolerated. February 14th is the shooting anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland Florida which makes this fake threat even more vicious.   Protection of our kids is our number one priority and this has to stop. There are real consequences to these fake threats that can last a lifetime. Parents, please talk to your kids and explain to them that these are not jokes and will have very serious consequences.” ~ Chief David Newlan
