On May 9, 2019, Cape Coral Police was notified by the District 21 Medical Examiner’s office that Ralph Hicks, W/M, 11/29/1925, died under Hospice Care as a result of complications from injuries he suffered in a traffic crash.

The original crash occurred on April 2, 2019 around 12:20 pm, where Cape Coral Police responded to a call for service in reference to a two vehicle traffic crash at NE Pine Island RD and Hibiscus DR. 

The preliminary synopsis of the Major Crash Investigator is below:

VEHICLE 1: Blue 2018 Hyundai Tucson SUV.

DRIVER 1: A 85 year old female.

DRIVER 1 INJURIES: Suffered minor injury in the crash.

VEHICLE 1 PASSENGER: Ralph A. Hicks, W/M, 11/29/1925, 242 Shrub Lane N, N. Ft Myers, FL, 33917.

VEHICLE 1 PASSENGER INJURIES: Ralph Hicks suffered serious injury in the crash.

VEHICLE 2: Maroon 2015 GMC Sierra pickup.

DRIVER 2: A 66 year old male.

DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Reported no injury in the crash.

VEHICLE 2 PASSENGER: A 52 year old female.

VEHICLE 2 PASSENGER INJURY: Reported no injury in the crash.

SYNOPSIS (information taken from original crash report): Vehicle 1 was traveling south on Hibiscus Dr exiting the parking lot of BJ’s, 1929 NE Pine Island Rd. Vehicle 2 was traveling west in the outside lane of NE Pine Island Rd approaching the intersection with Hibiscus Dr. Vehicle 1 traveled south across the west lanes of NE Pine Island Rd across the path of Vehicle 2 in an attempt to turn left into the eastbound lanes through the center median crossover. The front of Vehicle 2 collided with the left rear passenger door of Vehicle 1 causing Vehicle 1 to rotate counterclockwise. Vehicle 1 rotated around the left side of Vehicle 2 and its left front quarter collided with the left side of Vehicle 2 where it came to final rest. Vehicle 2 came to a stop straight ahead in the travel lane.

The driver and passenger of Vehicle 1 were injured in the crash, though their injuries were not thought to be life threatening; both were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. The passenger of Vehicle 1 died in hospice care on 5/6/19 as a result of complications from injuries he received in the traffic crash. The driver and passenger of Vehicle 2 did not complain of injury. The driver of Vehicle 1 was found at fault during the original traffic crash investigation and was cited for failing to yield the right of way. This traffic crash IS NOT alcohol/drug related.
