Chief David Newlan introduced the ‘Citizen Commendable Action Coin’ wanting to recognize citizens that go above and beyond. The recipient is presented with the coin along with a card explaining the following:
“Thank You For Your Commendable Action. On behalf of the Cape Coral Police Department, please accept this Challenge Coin in appreciation of your positive actions that make this community GREAT!
The Citizen Commendable Action Challenge Coin is given by an Officer of the Cape Coral Police Department to a civilian that performs an extraordinary act(s) or in the recognition of exemplary behavior.”
On May 9, 2019 around 3:30 pm, Officers Taylor and Herrara responded to a call for service in reference a request for officer.
A citizen of Cape Coral, Kristian Klessmann, who works as a mail carrier observed a black pickup truck with all of the windows covered and a hose coming from the tail pipe parked in the driveway of the residence. Klessmann further observed that the vehicle was running and that there was a male inside the vehicle in the drivers seat. Klessmann quickly acted by calling 9-1-1 and giving correct information to ensure a quick arrival by Cape Coral Police. Klessmann remained in the area until police arrived.
Officers were able to quickly locate the male and in speaking with him found that he was indeed suicidal. The male had run the hose from the tail pipe to the rear window of the truck, covered all the windows, written a suicide note, and taken anxiety medication to help him relax and breath in the fumes. After being checked by EMS the male was taken into custody under the provisions of the Baker Act.
Officer Patrick Taylor wrote, “It is my opinion that without Klessmann’s observations and quick action the male would have been successful in his suicide attempt. Because of her quick actions, I did present Klessmann with the Chiefs Citizens Challenge Coin and informed her that her actions saved a mans life.”
