Chief David Newlan introduced the ‘Citizen Commendable Action Coin’ wanting to recognize citizens that go above and beyond. The recipient is presented with the coin along with a card explaining the following:
“Thank You For Your Commendable Action. On behalf of the Cape Coral Police Department, please accept this Challenge Coin in appreciation of your positive actions that make this community GREAT!
The Citizen Commendable Action Challenge Coin is given by an Officer of the Cape Coral Police Department to a civilian that performs an extraordinary act(s) or in the recognition of exemplary behavior.”
On May 9, 2019, Sergeant Carlos Mena presented Jeannie M. Schmidt with a ‘Citizen Commendable Action Coin’ due to her exemplary behavior as shown below:
On December 1, 2018 around 5:00 PM, there was a report of an 11-year-old that ran away from his grandmother after a verbal argument in the area of 3200 Del Prado Blvd S. An extensive search was immediately conducted.
Jeannie M. Schmidt was in the area of St. Andrews Church when she saw a young child running north on Del Prado Blvd. Schmidt stated that she asked the child if he was okay and he said he was going home. Schmidt offered to give him a ride home due to his age and nightfall fast approaching. The child declined the ride and continued to walk. Schmidt offered to walk him home and he agreed. Schmidt stated that she could not get her phone or lock her car in fear that the child would run away. Nightfall quickly came and Schmidt walked the child to his residence which was approximately six miles from St Andrews Church.
A Cape Coral Police Officer made contact with both of them and confirmed the child was in good health and returned to his family. Jeannie M. Schmidt’s information was documented, and she began to walk back to her vehicle. The Officer asked Schmidt if she parked nearby and she stated, “St. Andrews”. Schmidt explained what happened and was driven back to her car. Schmidt was grateful for the ride and made it clear that the only important thing was that the child was home safe.
