On July 29, 2019 at around 10:45pm Cape Coral Police Officers were dispatched to a shots heard call. While en route to the call, the officers were told there was a male screaming a woman’s name. After a perimeter was set around the house, they found a large, light brown mixed breed dog that appeared to be deceased lying in the vacant lot next to the house where the shots came from.

While Korey James Potts exited the residence, he was crying and said that he shot his dog, Gordo. Officers could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. Potts admitted to drinking earlier. Potts’ roommate saw him in the yard with a handgun. (Taurus PT 809 9mm) She took the gun and threw it into the vacant lot and brought Potts inside the house. Witnesses also reported seeing Potts’ dog running around the house outside before hearing gunshots and seeing Potts lying near the dog in the vacant lot.

Based on the investigation, Korey James Potts was charged with the Aggravated Animal Cruelty, Discharging a Firearm in a Public of Residential Property and Using a Firearm While Under the Influence of an Alcoholic Beverage.

ARRESTED: Korey James Potts, W/M, DOB: 6-17-96, of Cape Coral, FL.
